Lynda's 50th

Though my dear friend and neighbor Lynda won't be officially turning 50 until Thursday, last night hubby Paul and her kids threw her a surprise birthday party. She had absolutely no clue, her family and friends got her good and hubby and I were fortunate to be part of the celebrations. I'm still recovering from a fun night of great friends, good eats, good music and let's not forget the great shooters!
To help with the celebrations Paul asked if we could make her cake and the only clue on what to make was that Lynda loves chocolate cake. So chocolate it was.

We decided to go with gift boxes. I know Lynda likes animal prints and she likes purple so we made the bottom tier a chocolate Guinness cake filled with vanilla cream and gave it a zebra print (favourite flavour  - check, animal print - check).  The top tier we decided to incorporate the purple (favourite colour - check) and for those at the party who might not be too into chocolate we made this one a vanilla cake with a fresh strawberry cream filling.

A few little details added like the gift tag and a gum paste bow to top it off and give it that gifty feel (is that even a word).  We also added a couple of gum paste gerbera daisies which is one of Lynda's favourite flowers. A little glitter here and there and I think it turned out great.

Lynda loved her cake and so did everyone at the party. It was a great party and hubby and I had a great time.  Happy Birthday Lynda! We wish you love and happiness for years to come.

Romantic wedding in burgundy & white

Yesterday Nicole and Chad celebrated a special day, their wedding day.  Nicole came to us through a mutual friend and asked if we could make her wedding cake. She had an idea in mind.

The number of cakes and cake placement was what Nicole requested along with roses in her colour choice of burgundy and white / burgundy tipped. The design of each cake was left to us.  There were 11 cakes in total as the wedding cake was being served as dessert for the guests. The picture above was taken at the venue where the final assembly was done but here is a look at the individual cakes;

All the cakes were vanilla cake filled with vanilla cream, covered in white fondant with fondant ruffled designs and gum paste roses and petals.  The wedding couple topper was provided by Nicole.  Above is the larger 3 tiered cake which was used as the main cake being placed above the fountain.

Here are a group of the cakes that graduate down from the larger cake. The next cake also a 3 tiered with clear pillars separating the 2 tiered with the 6" topper cake. Designed to resemble the main 3 tiered cake followed by a 2 tiered pillar cake, a simple 2 tier and the final single tier.

The cake table was beautifully decorated by Nicole's decorating team with burgundy organza and little twinkling lights. We supplied the lighted water fountain and added a little burgundy food colouring to the water so everything tied in beautifully. We also added gum paste rose petals scattered on the table to give it that romantic feel.

Congratulations to Nicole and Chad and wishes for a wonderful future together!

Baby shower in bright colours

This cake for last Sunday was to help celebrate an upcoming arrival.  Darah contacted us and asked if we could make this cake for her friend.

Darah requested the colours be yellow, blue and pink but in bright bold colours and that's exactly what we did here.  Bright yellow gum paste booties are used for the topper while bright fondant circles decorate the cake.

This single tiered cake is our yummy red velvet cake filled with cream cheese filling.  Best wishes to the mommy to be and for a safe arrival of this new addition to their family.

Elegant large rose wedding

Our 2nd wedding cake of last Saturday was requested by Evelyn for her daughter Lauryn's wedding. A simple but elegant 3 tiered cake adorned by one rose.

One rose but this rose is just blooming large.  The bottom tier of this cake was lemon cake filled with lemon curd and vanilla cream. The top 2 tiers were vanilla and chocolate cake with alternating layers filled with vanilla cream.

The center of the rose was touched with an ever so soft pink which got lighter as it continued to the outer petals of the rose.

We received a lovely thank you note from Evelyn telling us that Lauryn loved the cake and all the guests enjoyed it.  We wish Lauryn and her new hubby all the best for a wonderful bright future together!

Madagascar birthday

This next cake, also last Saturday, was for Mel's nephew Wyatt who turned 3 and is loving the Madagascar 3 movie.  His whole party was based on the Madagascar theme so we kept it going by making his cake a Madagascar cake.

This was a fun cake to make. Anytime it's as colourful as this cake, it just puts a smile on your face. This 2 tiered cake is chocolate fudge filled with cookies and cream buttercream. Details on the cake are all fondant and bordered with candy covered chocolate balls.

Mel made the characters for top of the cake. She did an amazing job with their fun poses and facial expressions, it just brought them to life and gave them personality.  They're made with gum paste with royal icing fros.

A big Happy Birthday wish goes out to Wyatt!

Wedding in purple

Last weekend was a busy one for us, 2 weddings, a birthday and a baby shower. 1st up is a simple and sweet 2 tiered wedding cake for Kate.  We were asked a little while back by her sister Sara to make Kate's bridal shower cake.  Kate loved her shower cake and gave us a call and asked if we could make the cake for her special day.

Kate's favourite colour is purple so we incorporated purple gum paste roses, and other design elements to create this pretty 2 tiered cake.

Both tiers were vanilla cake filled with vanilla cream.  Cakes are trimmed with purple ribbon and accented with royal icing dots.

congratulations to Kate & Jason
all the best for wonderful future together!
