Pretty in Pink Christening cake

This past Sunday a darling little girl was Christened and I was thrilled when Sayde's mom Michelle contacted me to make the cake for this special occasion.  Michelle requested a 2 tiered cake done in pinks.

The cake is our yummy vanilla cake filled with a cookies and cream butter cream filling.  The bottom tier is covered in an ombre of pink butter cream rosettes. The top tier is covered in a pale pink fondant topped with a gum paste fantasy rose with added pink sugar pearls.

A pretty cake for a pretty little girl.

God Bless Sayde!

Sofia the First for our little Princess

This past Wednesday my beautiful little granddaughter turned 3! Seems like only yesterday that she was born and just a little babe in our arms.  Last Saturday we celebrated her birthday with a few of her friends and family.  When I asked Juliana what cake she wanted she simply responded "Sofia the First" then said "actually, (her new favourite word, lol) I want Jake and the Neverland Pirates" then proceeded to laugh.  She is one funny little girl. Well we stuck with Sofia the First, not only because Jules loves Sofia but Mel had already purchased all the Sofia the First paraphernalia for the party. And for those of you who do not know who Sofia the First is, she is a fairly new addition to the Disney Junior cast of characters.

When deciding which direction to take on Jule's cake Mel and I decided to replicate Sofia's dress, crown and amulet, which by the way the amulet has magical powers which lets Sofia speak to her animal friends. So cool!  As far as flavours go the bottom tier is a chocolate zucchini cake filled with a light chocolate butter cream and the top tier is a vanilla cake with a raspberry curd and white chocolate mousse.

The crown and amulet are made from gum paste and painted with edible food colours. Little purple and clear jewels were added for the extra bling and because Sofia's crown and amulet also have jewels. (the jewels are not edible)....the colours look a little off.....more the lilac than the deep purple everything seems to appear to be.

The back view of Sofia's dress. The bow is made with fondant and all the scallops at the bottom of the dress are outlined in white sugar pearls and they are also added to the front bodice with a few scattered on the bottom tier.

Here's our little darling getting ready to blow out her # 3 candle. Note she is wearing a Sofia the First T-shirt.

Happy 3rd Birthday Princess Juliana!
We love you a whole bunch!

Jordon runner birthday cake

A little behind in posting but last weekend I made this cake for a gentleman who was turning 81 years young and apparently is a Jordon runner affectionato.  Not only does he wear Jordon runners he also collects them.  This was my 1st running shoe cake and of course it would have to be for a gentleman who probably can tell me all the details I missed on the shoe, lol.  Let's hope that Collin enjoyed his cake as much as I did making it for him.

When Nina contacted me about making this cake I was thrilled to give it a whirl.  She requested a vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream filling and that the shoe be in red and black.

All the details are done in fondant including the Jordon logo on the tongue as well as the laces.

Happy 81st birthday Collin!
we wish you many more wonderful years!

'FROZEN' themed 6th Birthday

Just waiting for this cake to be picked up today. It's for a little girl, Skyler, who is turning 6 and loves the movie Frozen. Who doesn't, it's one of the best Disney movies to come out. Anyway Skyler's mom Nina, who was referred to us by a mutual friend, contacted me and asked if I could make Skyler's birthday cake.

Skyler's mom did send me a picture of a cake they liked so I used the general idea and created this for Skyler.  It's actually a 2 tiered cake with the bottom tier in chocolate with cookies and cream frosting for the filling and the top tier is a vanilla cake with cookies and cream filling.

The staircase was created by carving the bottom cake and adding the carved part above it to join to the top tier.  Some cake was also used on the top tier to elevate the castle.  The blue staircase and base for the castle were covered in blue fondant, all else is done in white vanilla frosting to recreate snow.  A scatter of gum paste snow flakes and sparkly coarse sugar was added.

Here we have Elsa

and Anna

Kristof and Sven

and we can't forget the adorable Olaf, one of my favourite characters

These little characters are hard to find in Canada or US for that matter so they made the trip all the way from China just for us. I guess they must be on tour, LOL......little characters are great to add to any cake which gives the birthday girl or boy a memento and toy after the cake is done.

Happy Birthday Skyler!
We hope you enjoy your cake.

"Dusty" the plane

Yesterday I dropped off a cake for my God daughter's little guy Austin who turned 3. My how time flies.  Austin absolutely loves the little crop duster "Dusty" ever since he saw the movie. His mom says it's all he wants, everything and anything to do with Dusty, so what else to do but make his birthday cake based on "Dusty".

This 2 tiered cake is Austin's favourite, chocolate fudge filled with vanilla buttercream. All details are fondant except for our little crop duster which I made from a mixture of fondant/tylose. Thanks to a wonderful online tutorial from "Creative Cakes by Sharon" I was able to recreate our little character.

A little tricky since some parts are quite small but next time I think I'll make him out of gum paste which is a little more stable.

Blue skies and puffy white clouds used as our back drop and Austin's name in place of "Planes" on the Disney Planes movie logo.

Happy 3rd Birthday Austin!

A Mickey Mouse birthday

In looking over my posts, I can't believe I missed writing up on this one. Justin, one of my favourite little people.....my nephew's little guy......I guess he's my grand nephew, huh, anyway he turned 3 back in April.  I know we're in June but I honestly don't know how I missed it, but I did make him a cake. Justin is all about Mickey these days so we made him a Mickey Mouse cake.

This is a take on "The Cake Boss" rendition of Mickey.  2 tiers of Chocolate Guinness.....wanna guess who ordered the flavor, LOL.....filled with white chocolate mousse.  Actually if you count the cap on top which is cake, it's technically 3 tiers.   All details are made in fondant except for the bow tie and the ears which are made from gum paste.

Sorry buddy, didn't mean to miss you.  I know you loved your cake and had a fantastic birthday. Love you lots!
