Dr. Seuss cake

Well yesterday was Nathaniel's 1st birthday.  Nathaniel is the son of Mel & Phil's friends. The theme was Dr. Seuss, One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish.  We had fun doing this cake as we got to use our new air brush. Oh the possibilities!  Anyway, Nathaniel's mom ordered a red velvet cake with cream cheese icing. She also brought us a picture of a cake she found on Cake Central and asked if we could replicate it.  Thanks to Brea1026 on Cake Central for the inspiration.  We just modified it slightly to incorporate the "One fish, two fish" theme.  Here's a look at the cake we made;

The hat part of the cake we actually covered Styrofoam as it would have been way too much cake. The red stripes on the hat were airbrushed as was the actual cake airbrushed in blue. All other details are made from fondant and painted with edible food colouring.  The fish were cut out from white fondant, coloured and shaded for definition.  I think it turned out quite good and according to Mel everyone at the party loved it.  We also were asked to make a small smash cake, so in keeping with the theme we decided to make a fish.  I carved the fish out of red velvet cake and Mel iced it in green cream cheese icing and outlined and defined the details in black icing.  Actually came out quite cute, take a look;

May you have many more wonderful birthdays!!!

Handy Manny!

This was the last of the cakes this past week.  This cake was requested by a friend of mine who's little guy is turning 5 today.  She said her son Alessandro is a big "Handy Manny" fan and asked if we could make his cake.  The funny thing is that she told her son she couldn't find a Handy Manny cake and had to get him a princess cake.  Soooo mean, but the cute thing was that Alessandro told his mom if that's all she could find then that would be okay with him.  What a darling!  We made his cake vanilla with cookies and cream filling. We covered the cake in light brown fondant and made the top resemble wood. With Mel's steady hand she traced Manny onto the cake and filled Manny in with butter cream stars.  The top was to resemble the sign above his shop.  The tools are made from gum paste and painted with edible food colouring.  It really felt like they came to life once the eyes and face features were added.  I love this cake and it was fun making it.
I had the pleasure of dropping off this cake and watching Alessandro's face when he realized he didn't get a princess cake after all.  He was thrilled to find Handy Manny and his tools.

Happy Birthday Alessandro!

Hope you enjoy your cake!

Heart for a sweet girl!

We received this order through a friend of my husband.  His daughter Sierra (beautiful name!) turned 9 and requested a chocolate shaped heart cake.  Sierra loves pink and purple and from Mom I was told her birthday decorations included pink, yellow and purple so we based the cake around her colours.  The chocolate cake was filled with strawberry cream and covered in hot pink butter cream.  The details added were yellow and white daisies made from fondant with purple icing and white pearl centres and a couple of butterflies also made from fondant. The border is purple rosettes with white pearl centres. The only thing not edible were the little purple crystals added for a little sparkle.

HAPPY 9TH BIRTHDAY SIERRA!

"Sporting" Birthday

This cake was for a friend's dad celebrating a birthday and is a big "Sporting" fan. We were asked to do a simple cake just for a family birthday.  An 8" chocolate cake with cookies & cream filling decorated with an edible team logo.  The cake is all buttercream frosting.

Max & Ruby!

This past week was a busy one. Here is a cake for a little 3 year old who loves Max & Ruby.  I hope we did Max & Ruby justice and hope that Hailey loved her cake.  This was quite fun to make. I had no idea who Max & Ruby were, thanks to Mel who has a little one now and is up to date with all the cartoons.  Hailey's mom asked for a special cake for her little girl. At her request the 2 tiered cake is vanilla with strawberry cream and fresh strawberry filling.  Max & Ruby are made from gum paste and all other details are made from fondant. I molded Max & Ruby from a picture of them I saw when googling.  Cake design ideas came from several cakes seen online.

HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY HAILEY!

Lifeguard cake

Here's the 1st of 5 cakes due this week.  This cake was done for an 18th Birthday and the birthday boy happens to be a lifeguard.  Dad requested the cake to have a lifeguard theme and our decadent Guinness chocolate cake with cream cheese filling just spiked a little with Kahlua.  Mom & Dad picked up the cake on Sunday and were thrilled with it.  Let's hope Cairan is too!  Happy 18th Cairan and many more!
Here's a peek at the cake;
