Gucci birthday

We received a last minute request from a friend for his girlfriends birthday. At the beginning of the week were asked if we could make a Gucci bag and a shoe for Anitha's 26th birthday. The colours requested were pink/black but really Gucci colours are usually beige/brown with a red/green stripe down the centre.  We did however find that Gucci did make some hobo bags that break away from the traditional colours. So we decided to make a pink bag with the Gucci design on it in black with black details.  The shoe, made from gum paste,  is a very simple slip on in black with a pink insole.

The bag which is all chocolate cake is filled with cookies & cream filling.  The handles are black fondant mixed with tylose as is the top band.  The buckles and key ring are made from gum paste.  The board is covered in white fondant to resemble fabric with scattered non edible pink crystals.

Happy Birthday Anitha!

We hope you enjoy your cake and we wish you many more wonderful birthdays.

Double Birthday Wishes

I just delivered a cake Mel & I created for a couple who will be married later this year and happen to celebrate birthdays only a couple of days apart.  Norma, a dear friend requested this cake for her niece Tasha and Tasha's fiance Mike.  She asked if we could somehow incorporate Tasha being a Hygienist and Mike being a Carpenter in the cake. So this is what we came up with;

Norma asked for vanilla and chocolate cake so we did half in vanilla and half in chocolate and filled it all with Oreo cream cheese filling.  All hygienist instruments and all tools are made with gum paste, the tube of toothpaste is made with fondant. We joined the two with a fondant ribbon and interlocking hearts.

You all know that "Clean Teeth are Happy Teeth"
just look at those pearly whites.

Looks like Mike has all the right tools and is ready for a slice.

We wish Tasha and Mike each a very "Happy Birthday" and all the best for an amazing future together.

Monster Cakes

Well a Happy 2012 to everyone! Especially to 2 special little guys who turned 1 year old in January. Their mom who is a good friend of Mel's asked us to make a special cake for her twin boys.  The theme was monsters and Christine, the boys mom, had a definite design in mind and sent us a picture of a cake she found online.  She also asked if we could make 2 smash cakes for the boys, one each with their names on them.

This was the main cake which consisted of a 10" round as a base with an 8" round and a 6" 1/2 ball cake to make up the body of the monster.  The cake is vanilla but Christine wanted it to be multi coloured and since it would be hard to get a picture of the cake once it was cut, I took a picture of the cake that we cut off to level so you can see the colours of the cake;

We made each cake like this and filled the cakes with vanilla mousse.  These pieces are from the tops we cut from the 6" smash cakes.  Pretty cool uh? The cakes are all covered in butter cream and the main monster is textured to resemble fur and his eyes and mouth are made from fondant.  His arms are dowels covered 1st in orange fondant and then with frosting.  The bottom cake also covered in butter cream frosting has white fondant eyes.  Below are the 2 smash cakes covered in white butter cream and have fondant monsters around it with fondant grass. Each monster was created free hand.

Mel & Phil with the kids were at the birthday party and Mel receive rave reviews on the cake which is always a plus. Christine loved that it was exactly what she wanted and got a kick out of the fact that we gave the monster hands to hold the banner and the colourful cakes inside and out.

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY BOYS!
