Thomas the Train 3D cake

Just finished a cake for delivery today. Thomas the Train 3D engine.  This was a bit of a challenge but lots of fun seeing it come to life as we made it.  We searched on the web for a Thomas the Train cake and found some pretty good ones and lots of helpful hints.  We used a toy Thomas the Train engine I bought for my grandson Jackson at Christmas to help with the shape and the finishing touches.  A little word of caution if making a carved cake of any kind, stick to a basic firm cake and a butter cream icing.  This Thomas the Train is vanilla cake which was great for carving but the filling request was a strawberry cream with fresh strawberries which doesn't hold up well when carving as the strawberries tend to slip around.  We froze the cake when it was stacked prior to carving which helped the process.  This weekend we actually had 2 requests for Thomas the Train 3D engines.  This one is for Nicholas who is turning 2 and since it had to feed quite a few people I added a coal car.  I hope everyone enjoys the cake and I hope Nicholas will be thrilled.  Here's a look at the cake;

HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY NICHOLAS!

Construction Carpenter's 40th birthday

We just finished a cake for pick up this morning.  Frank who is a construction carpenter is celebrating his 40th birthday and his sister Julia requested a theme cake. The cake is a 10" double layer vanilla cake with custard and strawberry filling.  We covered the cake in tan fondant then scored and painted it (with edible food colouring) to resemble wood.  We added a gum paste saw that has cut into the cake, a couple of fondant tools, nails, ruler and boards add to the theme of the cake.  Happy 40th Frank and we hope you enjoy your cake.

Strawberry Shortcake 1st Birthday

Cruz is 1 years old!  My how time flies.  Cruz is Mel's goddaughter and Cruz's mommy & daddy threw her a birthday party this past Sunday. Monday was actually her birthday but the party was great fun and held at Jumping Jacks in Brampton.  Mel & I made Cruz's birthday cake and the theme was Strawberry Shortcake.  Mom found a picture of a cake that she wanted with slight modifications.  The 3 tiered cake was vanilla pound cake with custard and fresh strawberries for the filling.  Brightly coloured fondant details with a gum paste bow to top it off.  Here's a look at Cruz's cake;
